Addressing the Nursing Shortage: Shearwater Health’s Role in Nurse Education

The nursing shortage remains a critical challenge in the healthcare industry, impacting patient care and putting immense pressure on healthcare facilities worldwide. The shortage of registered nurses is expected to intensify as baby boomers age and the need for healthcare services increases.

In response to this crisis, Shearwater Health provides both bedside, and remote, clinical and administrative solutions that address the nursing shortage and further support international nurses through robust training academies. According to Lacie Behnke, MSN-Ed, RN, Director of Nursing Education at Shearwater Health, “Shearwater is unique in the healthcare industry because of all the different services we offer and the emphasis we place on quality and education for the nurses who work with us. I don’t feel a lot of other businesses in the industry put as much stress on high-quality educational processes to enhance nurse development.”

Prioritizing Nurse Education and Training

For international nurses, Shearwater opens doors to a promising career. Shearwater invests in their nurses through education and training, enabling and empowering them with knowledge, resulting in quality outcomes.

About the USRN Academy

The USRN Academy is an educational program for international nurses, providing not only examination preparation, but full financial sponsorship and processing assistance, to help them achieve US licensure. Shearwater also offers immigration sponsorships. Behnke emphasizes, “The advantage to nurses with our academy model is they’re able to achieve their NCLEX licensure at no cost to them, which will then prepare them to either immigrate to the United States or further grow their career opportunities in the Philippines.”

About the Utilization Management Academy

The Utilization Management (UM) Academy equips nurses with little to no background in UM with the necessary foundational knowledge and experience to be successful in their UM roles.

Shearwater has developed an UM Academy curriculum accredited by the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. Nurses who successfully complete the training receive continuing education hours that are recognized in the US, making Shearwater the only organization of our kind to offer UM training on this level.

Shearwater’s proprietary UM platform simulates a real-world UM environment, so nurses can apply the knowledge acquired throughout the academy, giving them hands-on experience.

Additionally, Shearwater has partnered with MCG, one of the leading nationally recognized UM guideline organizations in the industry. This partnership assists with further enhancing the educational opportunities in relation to interpretation and application of clinical guidelines for the UM nursing professionals at Shearwater Health.

Shearwater is continuing to evaluate the need for further academies in a variety of clinical areas, striving to further develop and improve the educational offerings for clinical staff.

Shearwater Health’s innovative approach to nurse education stands as a beacon of hope in addressing the nursing shortage. Through their emphasis on high-quality education, specialized academies, and unwavering support for nurses, Shearwater is not just bridging the educational gap but providing satisfying career pathways for nurses.
