Realizing the American Dream

unnamed

As the Marketing Coordinator for Shearwater Health, my day-to-day is typically geared towards the client facing side of the business. While I hear about nurse arrivals and work indirectly with the CPO side of Shearwater, I’ve never had the one-on-one time with the nurses whose time and commitment to their profession make up a big part of the organization. I had the opportunity to go on my first nurse arrival to Fort Lauderdale and to say it was a humbling experience is an understatement.

In assisting with this arrival, I was able to get to know May, a Filipino nurse, who is beginning her life here in the States. What struck me the most about May was her bravery and optimism. Traveling halfway across the world for a new job in a new country is not for the faint of heart, but her calm demeanor was palpable throughout her first few days in the States. From touring the hospital to moving into her apartment, she showed an impressive sense of positivity despite the unknowns of her new life. While some may be overwhelmed by the challenge of acclimating in it of itself, May told us she planned to start learning Spanish immediately. After working in Dubai for several years, she is no stranger to challenges and her can-do attitude is sure to make her time in the U.S. a success.

As a first generation American, I’ve benefitted from the sacrifices my parents and grandparents made to be raised here. Like other Americans, I tend to take the “American Dream” for granted. It’s an easy thing to do when our paths to success are clear, and we have the tools we need to achieve our goals. I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude to be able to work for a company that helps make the American Dream a reality for other individuals. This arrival put into perspective the trust that the nurses put in Shearwater to begin their careers in the U.S. at many different phrases of their life and the care that Shearwater takes to ensure the nurse has the tools to succeed.
